A seller who had just bought a Porsche became extremely frustrated when he discovered that the rear glass could break very easily.
Alex Cortese, an automotive consultant at Moving Merch, located in Dallas, Texas (USA), posted a video on Instagram to report the situation.
In the clip, he said he had bought the Porsche GT3 just 40 minutes before being informed that the rear glass had broken.
According to Cortese, one of his partners leaned their elbow on the rear glass while getting out of the car. Now, he will have to deal with a loss of $4,500.
In the caption, he explained that “Porsche started using lightweight glass in their new cars, which breaks extremely easily.”
“Both the side window and the front windshield broke without any impact, and somehow, it is a non-warranty item,” Cortese added.
The video has already accumulated over 1 million views. In the comments, internet users were equally shocked by how easily the window broke.
“I am a collision technician at Porsche. I regularly install these side windows and they frequently break during installation. They are extremely easy to break,” shared one Instagram user.
But why does Porsche use such thin and fragile glass? According to the website Motor 1, Porsche cars are designed with a focus on speed, so all components of the car prioritize this.
While the roof, hood, bumpers, rear wing, suspension, and doors are all made of carbon fiber material, the windows are made with an “ultra-thin” type of glass.
Besides improving the acoustics inside the car, the thinner glass keeps the vehicle light and, consequently, fast. Unfortunately, this design choice can be a real headache for owners.
